Shiny !

coffee and yarn: just what I needed !
Busy does not even cut the description of this week: Hectic with a capital H is more like it. Lots of dyeing, braiding, blending recipe testing, designing of labels, organizing of the clubs and last but not least , trying to keep my head above water in a business farm sense is more like it.

Everytime I am asked “I like to start my own business in Craft” by someone, I am always enthusiastic because I love what I do and would not want to do anything else. Saying that however, I do have to explain that I am not “normal” and I do not have a “Life” outside of craft. If you are honestly thinking of having either a family or life AND making a living from the stuff you make, please know that it is inhumanely almost impossible to do so, especially when you are coming from a paid job in the private sector with a steady income. So, asking my advice if you should start your own business in craft might not give you a full idea of what to expect in a reasonable way. Everyone’s’ reality is so different. If you are an insomniac, driven by crafty achievements and a huge competitor of yourself, I think you have come to the right place. This also goes for all the questions I get on how much to ask for something handcrafted that took x amount of time. Craft and art for that matter is something that is highly flammable a topic to discuss in a business kind of way. Craft and art are phenomena that have no price tag: it is either given away (therefore deriving the pricetag $0 and deemed worthless in capitalis society or priceless) or us crafters, frantically try to calculate “wort” by adding/multiplying/whatever to what you have made to try and remotely come to a favourable pricetag so that the something you have created with love can actually sell. And I say “sell’ opposed to “make money” for a reason. Craft is not something you easily make money from. Anything made by hand is per definition slow going, intensive and made with part of our hearts and souls. How can you possibly put a price on that ?

Saying that : the amount of people selling craft in the last ten years has increased hugely and that’s a good thing! Hand made or slow fashion is great! It signals that we cherish this handmade with heart fashion ! However, unless we all share the love, do not cave in to the principle of “ competition” that the modern economy thrusts upon is it is not going to go anywhere fast. Try to do your own thing, embrace your own way of doing things, love what others are doing and share. Honestly: living from what you make in craft is super hard and I am sorry to say: it will never give you a fancy car or a million dollar mansion. If you want that, go find a real job. However for all the determined, stubborn, “I would not survive doing anything else”-kinda people like me: do it ! The whole landscape fo business , especially small craft business or handmade is changing fast: you will have to do lots of different things: like designing, making and marketing. So many things in so little time. But if you love what you do or better still: if you are passionate about it, hours do not matter. The most important thing is to keep the passion! Always!
