Making Time

In a magical world, life would be filled with fairytales and sunshine, sunflowers and walks along the beach, sunshine and relaxing in a hammock reading a book, not worrying about anything because there would be nothing to worry about.

Reality however is not all magic, although I try to add as much magic as I possibly can. Life is not a bed of roses, well maybe it is , but you’d wish they’d taken the thorns out first before lying on them….
Oh what am I complaining about? I am alive! I am here and now!  I am surrounded by love and amazing people and fluffy bunnies.
I have a home to come to and a wonderful crafty arty life. Living a dream , people would say, not having to go work for a boss in a 9 to 5 job and not stressing about trams and trains and being late.
I can sleep in whenever I want to and go to bed whenever I want to. So, what’s the problem?
Yeah right, I think I just hit the nail on the head..: there is not really a problem except I am run off my feet trying to combine "Life" with creating and craft and running a business that pays the bills. And that last bit is a tough one: making a living from craft and art.

I have found that being my own boss is a great way to be for me: I am not very good with authority (AT ALL!..lol) but I am my own worst boss because I drive myself so hard that in any other “company” the union would step in and give the company a fine or shut it down. I have created my one man band sweatshop..hoorah!!

I am a multitasker and want to do everything myself from getting the idea to the creating to the sourcing to the production to the labelling and designing to the end product and the PR and the packing and the shipping. Yes, it is more than a full time job ! and I even want to do more !!!   Call me nuts ! lol

This year more than any year with the rare sheep breed adventures and the organisation and production side of all that plus a lot of new things that have been happening this year like: my hubby Pauls “Lair of the Bearded Dragon” spindles and his amazing works of art, there has been little or no “Life”: this year we went out for one night to see the MSO play Rachmaninovs 3rd piano concerto (for which I am still immensely grateful to Natasha !!) ..thats it ! yep..really: no cinema, no weekend away, no holiday, no eating out, no walks on a beach, no " down time" . Really, I am not complaining, I am just putting things in perspective for you and at the same time, writing this down puts it in perspective for me.  Especially, and here is the element that made this whole monologue of “No I am not complaining..” happen to be…a friend of Paul died at the extremely young age of 44 and a good friends son left this earth as well.    Now see, if that doesn’t put things in perspective I don’t know what will.

Life IS Magic. We fill it with things  we love, people we care about, learn a huge amount , work to make fun stuff happen and …then sometimes you come to the realisation that time does move fast and keeps moving faster. We put so much in our day and night , multitask so much that time just speeeeeeds away from us. I need to find a mechanism to slow time down..to slow me down..to slow life down. This is a necessity I have come to realise this week: I…need..to….slow….down……I can hear you ! yes, you !!! I hear you laughing all the way from there!!!! Well, at least I have good intentions to slow down…just a bit…....

Not really slowing down this weekend though..lol : there are two shows on: One at Pascoe vale:  a spin in play date , where I am going to do a talk and demo on mayan and Navajo spindling and talking about the anthropological side of spindling.
On Sunday it is time for the yearly Black n Coloured sheep and wool show at Cranbourne. An awesome full on event ! lots of fluff and sheepies to be cuddled ! All in all a super fun weekend and then …….THEN ….for me, this year there are no big shows anymore. Time to reflect and create and get myself together , create and materialise new ideas. I need that so very much. There will still be production schedules and orders , because let’s face it, I still have to put food on the table for the bunnies and ourselves.. But , it is that creative breathing time I desperately need to create new blends, organise more rare sheep breed adventures ( and believe me there are some AMAZING ONES in the pipe line !!!!) and do more designing and weaving, going to exhibitions, go out and breathe in…slowly and calmly…making time so to speak; Making Time!

So, with the chaos of preparing for this weekend,  I cannot really put an update up…I know! I am being a bad bunny! BUT!!! For all of you who cannot possibly make it to the shows this weekend I do have something special:

Oh You Pretty Things

What a week ! Busy as a bee trying to get all the clubs and adventures out of the door and hopping to its owners AND dyeing up a storm for the two events coming up next weekend! And –on the sidelines- watching Australian (and American) politics unfolding like in “getting the popcorn out”…

Last week I talked about discipline and learning and also trying to take better care of myself, like in eating breakfast instead of forgetting about myself all day and hopping straight into work mode. I have been a good girl with porridge time 5 out of the 7 days so in my book that is a good run. I just have to keep it up..lol

I always was very conscious of my size..I was born as a premature baby hardly weighing anything so my parents overcompensated from the very start I guess. They tried to get as much food into me and thought by overdosing me on fruit (LOTS OF IT) and veggies it was okay. It was…up to a point but the three maximum pieces of fruit per day were definitely not adhered to..lol I was a fruit addict..and when I tried to lose weight I even went on a fad fruit diet: only fruit and water. For me it was heaven. I lost weight but yo-yo’ed right back when I started eating “normal” again. And with normal I mean: bread, cheese and regular dinners. I was never one to snack on huge sugary stuff because it wasn’t around but I have never “done” breakfast…never! Not even when I was growing up.

So yeah, I was a chubby kid , a chubby teenager, until the age of about 15 when I had enough of the bullying and basically starved myself in the summer holidays to surprise them with me coming back 20 kilos lighter. I held on to that weight until I went to university and yep..yoyo again.. then I was fed up again (pardon the pun)  with all the weight gain for no apparent reason than regular eating and (my downfall) hardly any exercising ..so I joined a gym and ..typically me…I worked out not 2 or 3 hours a day but from 5pm (after work) til 10 or 11 at night…so..I lost (hold on to your hat here!) : 50 kilos!!!!! I went from a size 18-20 to a size 8-10. And,,here I am again…size 18..it’s like whatever I do, size 18 seems to be my “go-to”-weight…

People who know me, see that I do not binge eat or eat even…and still I am “my size”: I'm not fat, I'm fluffy!.. I call it..lol
The amount of bullying and hurtful things thrown at people that are overweight are tremendous! It hurts me, my psyche and I hate this behaviour from the people who just do not get that not everybody who is overweight is a slob and eats a shitload of fast food. It is overwhelming and unfair.

What brought this on? I was working and walking in and out of the living room, where Paul was a sucker for punishment and had turned on “the Biggest Loser Australia” on TV..I saw a few scenes of introduction of the “contestants” who were showing off their normal eating behaviour: 2.5 kilo burritos, a snack of a family pizza with chicken wings, ice cream for breakfast and a full pack of sugary cereal, a whole cake as a pick me up before dinner and a family lasagne for lunch! Guys! Really ????!!!!!! I was angry, disgusted and totally depressed seeing this. I know it is sensationalism but at the same time what is shown gives people who do not over eat or binge eat or drink a very bad name..well not give because we already have a bad name. It just adds to the myth that whatever you put in your mouth is what you are. And believe me : if I would write down what I eat in a day it will blow your mind and I am still size 18. It is friggin’ enfuriating.

Nevermind,,enough of my rant. I am me and I like me as a person and I am coming to grips with the fact that I do not have to like people who do not like me as me. Their loss..still..it makes me angry when stereotypical nonsense like TBL is perpetuating the myths…Rant over..

Learning Life

Anybody know a better word for busy ? Well that is me the last week: the rare sheep valais blacknose breed adventure has all been sent out : tops and batts ! and immediately I ahd to dive straight into the prepping and dyeing of all the September clubs. I feel like I have been in my dye studio for a month in a row and then immediately traded that spot for the funky batt carder and packing benches. Standing on my feet for appr 10 to 12 hours on end does seem to have its’ drawbacks: there was one morning I woke up , had to get up and …couldn’t. My back was on strike and obviously was telling me to either lie in bed like a n Egyptian mummy not able to move or take some painkillers and slap some heat cream on there. I cried..I’m not ashamed to admit it. I have found that being the energizer bunny I am has certain drawbacks: I am not able to stop until a job is finished and will keep doing what I am doing without so much as a stretch or a change of posture. Dumb! I know! Totally DUMB! So I am changing my ways. Same thing goes for my eating habits..non existant…yes…I get up (when my back is obviously complying with my rules..ahem) and then BANG! I start running around like a mad woman on a mission….no tea, no breakfast…no nothing ! Until I notice that it is about 12 or even 3 in the afternoon and …eh..hmmm I think I should eat something. And then ofcourse I think..I may as well wait til dinner…I have put my body in total starvartion mode all my life with the obvious result that some parts have ceased to function normally…even an energizer bunny battery could not help that. So again…recently I said to myself “No! No more!” It wouldn’t have been long before I faint or collapse on a more regular basis and then what? So…I have learnt my lesson and I am starting my day with the breakfast of champions : Porridge… and I have cut out a LOT of sugar intake from my diet as well. And you know what? I feel a lot better for it. I have to keep it up though and add a lot of exercise to the mix instead of just running about , standing ann working at the dyepots and sitting at the spinning wheel. I learnt my lesson. Now it’s just a matter of discipline and keeping it up !

Life is all about learning as we go. We (hopefully) learn from mistakes and even more so, we have to keep an open mind to learning new things all the time. If we would just keep doing what we are doing, life would be very boring and so amazingly stagnant. Now we all know what a stagnant pond smells like and we definitely do not want to become a smelly pond. No, I opt for a running river. That way I can stay fresh, grab new ideas and learn heaps of things. Much better !

I think we are all students. We might not all be in school, but throughout our lives, we are all constantly learning. We have to, it’s how we survive. If you’re in school right now, remember that learning continues after graduation. In fact, I feel like school is only one lesson in the curriculum of life and what you learn after you finish school will inevitably be more directly applicable to the life you will lead. Life is independent study—your learning will be freeform and less structured; it will be up to you to seek out your own lessons and knowledge. So the question is, do you know how to learn? It’s trickier than it sounds, so here are my 7 keys to learning as a professional. (If you’re still in school, read on! This applies to you too!)

1. Constantly rethink everything. Be a student of everyone and a follower of no one. We should try and learn as much as we can from everyone but always rethink what people teach us so that we can come to our own conclusions. Never blindly follow someone without questioning it. The reverse is also true: don’t blindly do what’s not done just because you want to be different. The key is to think for ourselves and make sure that what's been said makes sense to you. If your thinking is valid, your reasons will be valid and the actions that result from your reasons should also be valid.

 2. Adopt a habit of continuous learning. Remember back in school when you had to sit through 8 hours of lessons every day? If you haven’t been continuously learning—especially after you graduated school—sitting through that much intense learning in one day would probably be extremely frustrating and exhausting. That's why people think it's harder to learn as you get older. Learning, just like most anything else, once you start doing it, it gets easier and easier. Therefore, learning only seems harder as we get older because we haven’t been continuously learning and so we’re out of practice. But our world changes and evolves at such a quick pace, learning is not an option, it’s a necessity. Constant learning and growing is the only way to keep up or get ahead so make it a habit to learn something new all the time. Working hard is important but constant learning is just as much so. It's hard to keep creating and crafting and making your art if you don't take time to “sharpen your pencil”.

3. Acquire as much knowledge as you can, even if it's how to do the same thing in 7 different ways. Like spinning lace yarn one day but art yarn the next. Not only will this habit make you valuable for many different styles and types of projects, it will help evolve your own personal style into something that is based on a great foundation of the knowledge you've absorbed. Have you ever noticed that, as we become professionals and begin to hone our craft, many of us stop exploring different techniques? In fact, many of us start limiting our techniques and methods to a more easily repeated procedure. This is fine for some people of course, but I believe the key to constant growth and evolution is still through constant exploration, even if it’s just trying to tackle the same thing in multiple different ways.

4. Don't let where you started dictate where you'll finish. I’m constantly asked, I’m X years of age, is it too late to start? Or, I’m from a small town/province/country, can I still make a living from art? My answer to these types of questions is, you can do it if you want to do it. I've seen people retire and pursue learning art in their sixties, or become famous on the internet despite living in a developing country. Your circumstances shape you but they don’t define you. Everywhere we look, we can see people who have overcome limitations to achieve great things. In the face of adversity, you will always be faced with a simple question: continue or stop? You know what results you will get with which answer. To continue is to be dedicated to learning, set aside a specific time in your schedule just to learn. Once you develop the habit of learning on a consistent basis, then make sure the people you're learning from are the best teachers that you can find. If the great teacher that you find teaches in a structured and inspirational manner, that’s even better! You will learn much faster in a structured class than just practicing by yourself.

5. Our artistic abilities are like our muscles: we must exercise them constantly or they'll atrophy and shrink. When I realized this, my whole outlook on my art habits changed. I went from “How do I do more art?” to “How do I stay artistically fit?" It's not about learning something once and that's it; it's about constantly and consistently exercising that way of thinking and strengthening it like a muscle. And don't stop there. Much like how we would exercise the many different muscles in our bodies, we have to exercise the many different ways of seeing, thinking, and interpreting in order to stay artistically fit.

 6. Make it easy to do good things. Getting up off the couch is hard enough, don’t give yourself more unnecessary barriers by scattering your art supplies throughout your house. Set yourself up for success by making it as easy and convenient as possible to do what needs doing. For example, I  put all my supplies of what I need for a particular project systematically in a designated tub, everything is concentrated in a clean and accessible area. That way, I do not need to look for that particular fibre I need for that project all over the house. It’s energy I rather spend on something more constructive.; everything is done and ready. So, help your future self by making it easy to improve your present self. If this for you includes taking online classes from the comfort of your home: YouTube is your friend. Do Craftsy classes. Sign up for that workshop you wanted to do. Learn new things even if they seem scary ! Learn new things all the time. You will have so much fun !

 7. There's a natural balance in life: if we don't discipline ourselves, life will eventually discipline us. I found that out the hard way several times..lol. So maintain discipline. This means doing what you know you should do even if you don’t want to do it. I have that “ I work better under pressure and deadlines” myth going on in my head. Meaning that for some custom orders I have to stay up days to make sure the order gets out on time. At the same time that totally is counter productive for anything else going on : like “life” which I don’t really have a lot of to start with outside my Art and Craft business. So I just have to make it more structured and easy for myself. Pressure is good but it is always better to be able to take the frustration out of thing s and the fear of not having to panic..lol In short: Make sure you're doing something to constantly learn, improve, and evolve and to have fun doing it !

For todays update some very special sheep breed blend tops : Navajo Churro with angora bunny ! The Navajo Churro almost died out completely until in the 1970s a very concerned vet started the Navajo sheep project. It has been amazing and helping the Navajo Nation or the Dineh people, very much. The yarn spun from this sheep has been used in the fabulous Navajo rug weaving for hundreds of years.
