Bunny Invasion imminent!

The bunny horde called George on its way to invade Tasmania

Life sure is not boring … there are lots of things going on..bunny care, oncology visit last Tuesday which left me walking like a duck –oh joy..don’t worry its apparently under control but that doesn’t mean these visits are not annoying..to say the least- and then ofcourse I am pulling all nighters to get as much done , packed, labelled dyed and spun for Bothwell NEXT WEEK!!! Yes! I will be on the boat to Tasmania next Tuesday and at the Bothwell show from Thursday til Sunday ! There are lots of fun things planned but first I will have to get as much funny bunny stuff ready !

it is exciting and scary at the same time..the excitement is killing me….and I can’t wait to see all the fibre fans in Tasmania ! and ofcourse Tasmania itself ! I have heard so many magical things about it but have never been there, so it is very very exciting indeed ! my car will be loaded to the brim again I reckon, because the stock room is half full and that room is definitely bigger than my Tardis….lucky for me , fibre is squishable…lol

The Bothwell International Highland Spin in will open on Friday the 1st Saturday the 2nd and Sunday the 3rd of march. It is going to be a super special because this is the 35th year reunion event. There are going to be heaps of fun stuff: sheep dog trials, yarn bombing of Bothwell, show and tells, lots of workshops, fashion parades and demonstrations and ofcourse there will be heaps of stallholders offering lots of fibery goodies. I will have my stall there at the schoolgrounds filled to the brim with bunny fluff, tops, silks and ofcourse our very own IxCHeL blends that are super special to work with! Oh and yarns! How can I possibly forget my sock yarns, handspun bunny mink, angora and art yarns ! and BADGES!! new badges! yeah

I will not make this update a big one because I fear I am running out of time ..still have heaps of wooshes and batts to make !

On offer on this weeks shopblog is a new batch of Navajo Churro Bunny tops that are amazing to spin for socks or outerwear and it is so feltable as well! Very special stuff and am bonus is that you will be helping the rare Navajo churro sheep breed survive!!!!.Enjoy !

Life's a Dream

Amazingly coloured butterfly .. having a party on the hyssop flowers

Last week I wrote a short blog because Jazz had an urgent appointment with the vet when her neck was so swollen she could hardly breathe. Well, it’s a week later and she’s back to her puppy like self. Sigh of relief!!! Now it’s my turn..not to get an inflamed neck but close…(back to Oncology again next Tuesday I’m afraid..more biopsies on the menu and not ones I am looking forward to I tell ya!)

…..Also , and that is on a more happy note:…It’s almost sailing off time to the Tasmanian Bothwell spin in show and I have been working late late late hours and all hours of the day. I am almost ready just a lot of funky bunny batts and wooshes and angora bunny fibre packaging to do and ofcourse let’s not forget the badges !
Anyway, work work work work work and fun ofcourse but however way you look at it….it is more than a hobby when you find yourself standing in front of dyepots thinking up new colour combinations , blends and spinning yarns, making labels for about 20hours a day. The only difference with what I do and a "regular"job is that I get the equivalent of a glamerous 10cents an hour ...  I wish I had fiber dobbies..well, let’s not be picky..any dobbies would be helpful…lol.

The rest of life goes on as well: the veggie plots for the bunnies and us, the house, the cooking, the taking care of the animals and ofcourse the grooming. Just before big shows or any kind of event really, there’s a lot of extra energy and push to get things ready and as perfect as I can get it. There’s no way I could do this if I did not have a deep love for fibre, colours, design and animals. As with everything, whatever path you wish to take in your life, the most important thing in all of this, whether it is being an artist, singer, writer, doctor or working in an office or a factory, is… passion and love for what you do. It becomes a chore and painful if you don’t feel that way with whatever you are doing. It will become tired, you will become tired and you will keep saying to yourself..ÿeah, but its easy, I hate change..I’ll just keep doing what I do”. And then sometimes things happen and you have to change whether you like it or not and sometimes that is the best thing that could ever have happened to you.

Never be afraid to follow your dream however hard it may seem (and ..never be afraid to dream!..It's never too late).
Never think it is  going to be easy, but the easy paths are often littered with regrets and lost opportunities.
Have fun in whatever you do, live life to the fullest because you never know how long your time on this plane of reality will last. Carpe Diem .

Being up late , trying to make my self imposed deadlines , I have been lucky enough to catch up on some documentaries and the one about Andy Warhol was one of the most fascinating ones. Repetitive, commercial, deep and shallow at the same time and such an amazing time it all plays out in: Marilyn, the Kennedys, Velvet underground, was there a philosophy behind Pop Art ? Why, how?

It was  fascinating and scary to see the trainwreck of people with high hopes happening in The Factory…so much pain and self destruction…is it inherent in the art world I wonder or in the music “industry” or in artists ?
It comes down to that one combination again: passion and believing in what you do. And isn’t THAT at the crux that most artists create pain in themselves by doubting what they do all the time, craving for success , attention and love...and depending on what others think instead of creating and believing in what you do. Alays craving for that brief recognition, like it is a drug that they have to keep injecting in the depths of their brain to be able to survive and create again.  Depending on what other people think of what they have produced and all the time opening themselves up totally, leaving  themselves vulnerable and bare. Or wait….is that called human?..... Are we the only species that always wish we could be what we are not, aspiring to something, creating something different ... new?, instead of just being what we are and living in the moment.  Looking at that butterfly and registering its beauty in awe and being grateful I am here, now..is a start. Happiness is now...

Watch the documentary and if you can’t , have a listen to Lou Reed and John Cales album “Songs for Drella”. It just adds so much more to just seeing a Campbells’ soup cans or so many colourful Marilyns. Art imitating life or…life imitating art? Just like that butterfly I saw in our garden sipping nectar from a hyssop plant: a brilliant fluo green wings with deep black and bright , very bright green legs set against the dusky purple flowers of the hyssop. You do not need to be an artist to be inspired, you just have to open your eyes and …..watch…and see the beauty and make it change you… from the inside out.

Smelling the Roses...

The world can be a strange place… it still is…In Beijing somebody is selling fresh air in a can, come to think of it, when going up to Macchu Picchu you could actually buy oxygen in a balloon so just the packaging changed…and in England somebody found what some newspapers called “whale vomit” worth over $150.000,- ! It’s ofcourse special “vomit” called ambergris and not your run of the mill cat hairballs. (It’s actually caused by the whale not being able to digest all of the cuddlefish it ate…)…Although it smells horrible on its own….it is a very important element in the perfume industry, where it is used to create a musky undertone scent and makes the perfume last longer while wearing it.

The perfume industry is really a fascinating business….makes me want to read Perfume by Patrick Susskind again. I did delve into the Secret of Perfume a while back and it is just amazing how it all evolved and works.

Natural musks have all but one been banned from being used because it causes skin problems, jasmine can only be used in a very low % also because of the fact that so many people are allergic to it, so they are replacing lots and lots of scent elements with manmade scent “chemicals. The strange thing is that all things are “chemical” ofcourse even the natural essences…if you know what I mean…Why would anybody in their right mind want to dab an animals secretions from the nether regions(=musks) on their neck? It sounds absurd but still lots of people do it..not necessarily because they know what it is but because it is all part of a package called perfume that will make you smell “nice” or more “desireable”…the whole scent thing is amazing…and more important than you might think.

Just imagine when you would not be able to smell anything!….and this does happen ! Lots of people who have had the misfortune to be in a car accident for example had their sense of smell robbed from them. Michael Hutchince from INXS was one of them before he was catapulted into melancholy and ultimately suicide. When your sense of smell is not working anymore your sense of taste also goes out of the window: an apple will taste just like a potato! Imagine that! and more importantly it is directly linked to depression. Not being able to smell changes your whole way of life. You will not be able to smell that there is a fire somewhere or that your dinner is burning or food is off for that matter. So it is more important than you think to “smell the roses “…

It is already the first of February! The “slight” murmur of panic is starting to get louder and louder as the Bothwell Show is getting closer and closer. And there is still so much to do !!!! The whole house is filled with hand dyed fibres and yarns to be labelled and packed and there’s a big mountain of things still to be dyed and spun. Twenty six days to go before I hop on a ferry to Tasmania with my Tardis filled to the brim. I have never been to Tasmania but I have heard that it is a magical place. I am so looking forward to spending some quality time there. Preparations are on their way for Bothwell (march 1.2 and 3) and also a meet up with the Kingston Spinners and knitters group on Tuesday the 5th of March. It is going to be so exciting ! and ofcourse I can’t wait to meet up with good friends !
