The Enigma of Choice

Or, the Phenomenology of Cheese, Coffee,Honey and yohoho a bottle of Rum

No, no, no….no news yet. I have called the oncology department and asked for my results that should really have been there and been called in to me already, but “due to privacy issues they could not tell me anything “ about ME, MYSELF and MY results.

This is not the first time that something like this has happened. So I stop beating myself up about it. The whole privacy things is totally blown out of proportions. I can totally understand people wanting to protect themselves from invasive telephone calls, media coverage, using their behavioural buying sprees as marketing tools and the list goes on and on. I do believe that it is a plot though. Big Bunny (read Big Brother and I do not mean the tv show!) is watching us wherever we are, whatever we do.

If you have a smart phone it has a gps signal and when you have not changed the settings it will automatically tell everybody of your facebook friends AND marketing companies all over the world probably that at 10:15 you have stepped through the doors of your local hardware store, grocery chain store, Target or even a restaurant if they have chosen to be part of the human tracking system. And I know it has far reaching consequences to everyones life, but you do have a choice not to participate:

1. move to remote areas without mobile coverage (but , would techno internet savvy fans cope?);
2. give up all your credit cards, loyalty cards, bank account(s), loans, memberships to this that and everything (but, would you want to or could you?)
3. don’t get a job, get paid, get medicare, phone, bills , etc (is it possible? Probably yes, but again, would you want to?)

I am not saying I have an answer , but I do choose to  take part in surveys and yes, even have loyalty cards. We can choose to use the system just as much as the system uses us. The sooner we recognise that it’s best to not have secrets, and there is no privacy in the strictest sense of the word, then the happier we will be and the better we can manipulate/use or get the benefits of it.
Choice is the key word here, because you can choose how far you want to cooperate or not. The more secrets there are in society as a whole or in government for that matter, the sooner the whole system will grind to a halt because nobody really knows how what can be said to whom. Secrets are bad. They wear everything down. So, ye stupid privacy secret act, give it up and give me my results. Grumbles and stomps foot while bashing head against the wall…..

Again, whenever in doubt, pain (after grumbling and bashing head against wall) , do fun stuff !

I don’t know about you but when I am mad at myself, my husband, the system, the dog, anything really, I have this urge to clean, do housework or this week, do some highly physical work: tackling the steps to the bunny run and the chook house and yes, you are hearing this right: the veggie raised bed garden!!!
I knew I had three days to tackle these outside activities due to an abnormal lack of rain, precipitation or even isolated showers (which in 100% of the cases wind up where we live). By the way, Can anybody tell me what on earth the difference is between rain and showers? You can obviously count showers because the Melbourne weather forecast website said for today “early rain and then a shower or two”. Does that mean: wet, with an intermittent 2 chances of being even more wet? And, more importantly, is anybody counting the showers???
Talking about choices: last night Paul was flicking through the tv channels and we watched a bit of Jamie Olivers 30 minute meals…which would take me about 2 hours to make ..lol…anyway…he mentioned to try cheese, fresh grounded coffee and a dash of honey…try it! Th idea of mixing good cheese with honey was okay but then th eidea of dipping it in coffee grind was a bit yuck.. being in an adventurous mood and taking the challenge I made the choice to try it. All I can say is :HEAVEN!!!! Try it , please do ! it is awesome! YUM!
Which brings me to another milestone this week: Paul and I have finally opened our first home made parmesan cheese which we patiently left alone to age since may last year….it was amazing ! Photos of the Parmesan cheese to virtually enjoy are to be seen on my flick photostream in the IxCHeL fibre farm set ! I have a feeling that there will be some more cheesemaking in the near future ! Hey, even some cheese workshops for all of you out there who would love to know more and enjoy your own home made cheeses……

Anyway, I digress. So, I did the steps !
Yes see photos here:
three of the steps, there are 5 in total going down the slope..
It means I do not slip every single day in fear of landing face down in the mud and the blood and the poo. It’s a huge relief!

Then, I cleared the veggie garden area, well, soon to be veggie garden and relax area. First of all I tackled the relax area..yes, it’s very important to have a little spot to sit, read or spin or knit, while you watch your veggies grow.
With only a bamboo border a bamboo screen and some nice euca mulch, combined with a lot of inventing and smiles, this area came up a treat. I even installed nice solar lights so it kind of looks like somewhere in the tropics (in comes the Tikki torches at twilight song by David Lindley) where you can have a fun party doing limbo dancing….

Then the hedges went up : a combination of fruit bushes, bay leaf trees you can sculpt and box hedges. And again the euca mulch gives a nice finishing touch. Hoorah!

Safe to say I am now ready to put the raised garden beds in, but have to wait for Paul to give me hand cutting up some of the big boards in half .
I would have tackled it, but yesterday I had this dream I was using the circular saw and cut half my leg off, so I wisely decided to not cut anything….. I will just have to wait to get planting for a little bit more…besides every muscle is hurting after all the digging and plowing and pulling and planting.

To top this whole rather successful week off I received a wonderful most amazing gift from Lindy Winnell in the mail!!!
I could not believe my eyes at the wonder and beauty of it: it is a JOLLY ROGER SHAWL designed by Aino Haikala and knitted by Lindy from IxCHeL blue faced Leicester bunny yarn in Rainbow and the border filled with jolly rogers is knitted in the IxCHeL cashmerino laceweight ! It is amazingly beautiful !!! Thank you thank you thank you Lindy ! You have brightened up the whole week, you very talented lady you ! I will wear and display it with honour and love !
Jolly Roger Shawl gifted to me by Lindy. It is absolutely GORGEOUS!!! I’m so ready for National Pirate Day now on September 19th ! Yohoho and a bottle of Rum! More info on the International Talk like a Pirate day which has its 10th anniversary this year right….er… here: http://www.talklikeapirate.com/piratehome.html

Thank you so So much for the Jolly Roger booty Lindy!!

Plans for the next week? Ofcourse finishing off the veggie plot, weather willing ! and, yes here it comes hold on to your hats!….trying to get the IxCHeL shop website up and running ! Okay…got back on your chair yet? After laughing so hard it hurt? Yeah yeah rub it in, will you !…lol I have been procrastinating over that thing now for 4 or 5 years and it is about time I get it going ! I have to admit it is mainly the fault of a very dear friend of mine, who shall at this time remain nameless because I do not want to burst her bubble!, but she is eager to start her fabulous business, opened an account with the same web hosting company I am with and I tell you, it would be an utter sign of terrible defeat for me if she gets her website up sooner than I do mine…lol. And if that is not all, if I get it all done, at least Paul will stop nagging me.. for instance, after seeing all the work I had done outside it wasn't “Oh honey, you have done a great job!”      NO!,no !   You know what he said?... “So, have you started your website yet?” Bless him !

Hear, see, question and Rabbit on !

Still hanging on, but no longer walking like a duck. I have had no news from the hospital yet. Instead of letting it get up my nerves, I decided that no news is good news. Either that or they lost my gorgeous blobs of biopsy material….Let’s not go there….In a way I have not had time, or rather, given myself time to worry: bunny spin in preparations, spin ins, organising lots of exciting new fibery stuff happening , bunny clipping and grooming and last but not least: intricate planning of a new outside bunny run where the bunbuns can hop to their hearts content without getting wet in this rain kingdom where we are, kitchen renovations (yeah!) and ofcourse the ever ongoing master plan on the raised veggie garden coming soon to a theatre near you…and I’m not even going to mention the IxCHeL online shop website……(yes yes, slap me !..;) ) lol

Whenever in doubt, do fun stuff. Whenever in doubt, do not listen to the gossip. Which leads me to another discussion. I have always been very very open about everything that has been going on in my life be it good or bad. So you may think there is absolutely no question at all in anybody’s mind as to what is happening. WRONG! Apparently there are a huge quantity of people happy enough to take the word of others. Take this little story for example of a girl who came by at a spin in wanting to purchase some yarns: “oh, you still have bunnies! I thought you had given that up?”or another one of my favourites “I thought you were not selling yarns anymore or spinning because you were so sick”…and the list goes on and on and on. I do not know how these things start. People are obvious blissfully happy to assume the worse type scenario. And ofcourse stories change. I am sure that if you make up a story, tell it to a couple of your friends, the story will have changed considerably when it gets back to you as a gossip boomerang a week down the track. Or maybe, with all the fast social media happening, the gossip boomerang will hit you in the face in minutes. There is a fast return apparently. Makes me wonder what is real, what is truth and what is really going on in the world. Even the times we could rely on photographic evidence is over now that you can basically photoshop everything in or out of a photo. So what do you believe?

Certainly not the media, the politicians, the news paper, lawyers, doctors or faint acquaintances . Friends maybe? How about yourself? I’m not one that automatically goes into conspiracy theory behaviour but it all makes you think doesn’t it? Best thing is in my opinion anyway, is to question everything you hear and get to the bottom of things yourself and never ever say “hey, did you hear about so and so?? Just terrible isn’t it? “ Is it an inherent human gene to like gossip? And why is gossip in about 80% of the cases telling you bad or hurtful things about somebody, whether it is true or not?.

So in short: if you can’t say anything good about somebody, don’t say anything. It’s just bad karma getting the better of you. Let’s not give in to gossip , let’s all have as good a time that we can possibly have and leave those who cannot help themselves but just have to gossip and tell bad things about others in their own little colony. Let’s have fun instead ! Spin, knit, felt, crochet, weave and be merry ! and ….do lots of hugging, cuddling and laughing. Hoorah!

In Limbo

Some weeks just start off wrong. I wasn’t looking forward to this week I have to tell you straight off, because of another visit to the oncology department, but I certainly didn’t count on the mess ! First on Monday, a probably well meaning reader of Grass Roots magazine where a couple of my articles were published about bunnies, my life on the farm, etc., sent me a huge letter basically pointing out to me that if I would have been a vegan I could have PREVENTED cancer. And to get healthy not to eat meat, drink alcohol, eat cheese, chocolate, drugs or drink milk. Safe to say that message which lasted 2 A4 pages long and was filled with capital letters to put aggressive emphasis on the message did not leave me smiling or gave me that nice warm glow. Instead it just said it was all my own fault. I have a lot of respect for people with convictions, with all kinds of belief systems , be it vegans, vegetarians, Pagans, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, anybody…..I only have problems when people go into convert mode if you know what I mean and start preaching doomsday and pointing fingers. I was not feeling all that confident about the Tuesday hospital visit and this just was not what I needed. So, a big THANK YOU for that…..(not). Believe and practice all you want and discuss all you want, but please add compassion to it, so it reeks less of the Spanish Inquisition…(great now I can’t get that Monthy Python sketch out of my mind..lol)

Anyway, moving on to Tuesday: I won’t go into details, but I will say this: if you thought that having needles for local anaesthetic put into your gum when going to the dentist is tough, try imagining what it feels like to have a big pointy needle stuck into your private parts and try not to kick the doctor in the face in a reflex…..CRINGE!!!!! and yes, totally Oouch!!.. Anywy, Biopsies were taken which at the time ofcourse did not hurt because of the anaesthetic and I was still holding my breath making my head take the shade of an aubergine..but Oh boy did it hurt afterwards..its been three days now and I still feel like Im walking like a duck..which by the way is beneficial seeing that our whole place is almost totally flooded by the huge amount of rain we’ve been getting. I discovered that it’s not only the water coming down from the sky that makes things wet, but also the fact that the water table is so darn high , the springs on our property are gushing water out like it was going out of fashion,,,I digress…hospital…looking like a tomato/aubergine, holding breath, trying not to think about the awkward position I have to hold myself in, which by the way, faces the door! If there is one thing you don’t really want to experience is the fact that somebody opens the door, looks straight at your……………… and says “Oops, sorry, wrong door…” . Luckily that didn’t happen…but there’s always next time. Anyway, the abnormalities were nicely cut out (I hope, I can’t really check since my contortionist days are long over) and now it’s a waiting game to hear if it is ..A) Bad, B) Not so bad or C) Very bad…..Hence the title of this blog: In Limbo….like not knowing what needs to be done, not alluding in anyway shape or form to the acrobatics you have to go through to dance under an ever lowering stick..although it kind of feels like that as well at the moment.

I was a mess on Tuesday, Wednesday and the best part of Thursday. I couldn’t focus, couldn’t think, could not concentrate, I was forgetting this and that, backed into Pauls car which I totally forgot was there! DOH!…until today, still sore and walking like a duck, but at least my inner stand up comedian is back on duty which is such a relief! If there is any religion or belief system you want to adhere to in times of utter stress and blackness, please please, may it be the Religion of Humour! It makes the worst scenario quite easy to cope with and lets face it, it’s much nicer for other people to deal with a smiling fool than a blubbering one. On top of that, it’s better for your looks. I hate it when your eyes go all droopy and puffy and blue, so my vote is definitely for the go out with a smile type of thing ..

Safe to say, by the way, just in case you were wondering…..I have not done the veggie patch…yet….
On Thursday I received two parcels in the mail which were both unexpected and brought a happy tear and warm glow to me. You see, the universe is balanced I’m sure. There are so many people with warm hearts and sharing natures out there. Thank you thank you thank you!!! Your parcels couldn’t have come at a better time ! First I want to thank the wonderful Bernie Sammon for her beautiful embroidered teatowel with a gorgeous bunny and happy flowers. It put such a smile on my face ! Thank you thank you thank you! Oh and by the way: you did say it was totally washable, but I wouldn’t dream drying dishes with your art work. It will be on display and will have a place of honour in our kitchen !!
Happy bouncing bunny
Then on the same day I got another mystery parcel from Spinning Woodie , a gorgeous wood turner in South Australia who sells the most wonderful spindles and knitting paraphernalia !
Osage Orange treasures
It was a bag of Osage orange shavings (YUMMY FOR DYEING!!!!!!) and to top it all off a gorgeous hand turned osage orange circular knitting needle holder! And a what I would call a tongue holder…lol…but it’s also a book mark ! and all of it made out of the magical Osage Orange wood, which is especially meaningful and powerful for Native Americans. Especially the Comanches were known to make the most wonderful bows with it but we from the Menominee nation, use it in the dyepots !

Here is some natural dyeing information when wanting to use the Osage Orange which will give you bright Yellow to Khaki Greens: ·

Osage Orange dyes best when the chips have soaked, in water, for several days.
Osage Orange does not require a mordant for dyeing, it is a substantive dye, and it is high in natural tannins.
· Place Osage Orange chips into a plastic bucket and cover with hot, not boiling, water. A 10litre bucket works well for this method. ·
*Note on water quality: If your water is very alkaline or acidic, high in iron, etc… I suggest using distilled water. High mineral contents in your water supply will act as a mordant and grossly alter your expected dye colors. Rain water is always best for dyeing!
· Leave this solution to sit, in a warm place, like a sunny window, for one week; you may soak the Osage Orange upwards of three years, so long as mold does not grow on the surface. At a minimum your Osage Orange should soak overnight.
· Remove Osage Orange chips from the resultant liqueur, and place onto a screen or screen-like surface to dry. Once dry you may store, or reuse, the Osage Orange chips for future dye baths. The color will be lighter, but you will find by allowing them to dry, and then reuse them, you will be able to extract a lot of color from the chips.
· Place your Osage Orange liqueur into a dye pot, place pot onto heat source and bring the solution to a simmer.
· Place your wetted fabrics into the dye pot; simmer for two hours.
· Remove from heat and allow the fabric to remain in the dye bath, overnight or longer if desired. · Allowing the fabric to remain in the dye pot, as the dye bath cools, allows for more of the dye molecules to bind with the fibers.
· Remove fabric from the dye bath and rinse the fabric thoroughly. Some dye color will rinse off in the process, this is normal.
· Allow the fabric to line dry.
· You may then post mordant the fabrics  or you may over dye the fabric with another color, such as indigo to acquire a second color.
· Osage Orange and Indigo will yield beautiful greens.
· The Fabric can then be machine-washed and dried, using a mild detergent without bleaches or oxidizers. These types of detergents will remove natural dye colors. I alwys use organic shampoo or dishwashing detergent.

Thank you so much Spinning Woodie for your wonderful gifts that put a warm glow in my heart ! Big hugs to you Ron and Roz and your gorgeous dog Sheila ! And for all of you spinning and knitting fans out there: if you want to get your hands on some of spinningwoodies wonderful work please contact him on www.ravelry.com where he is ofcourse known as : Spinningwoodie !
I have a very exciting new update planned for all of you fibery fans of fluffy goodness and tomorrow is another Bunny Spin in Day with a FULL HOUSE! So after this update I better get my duck into gear and start baking !

Have fun and please please Rabbit on with a SMILE !
